In the spring of 2020, a domestic turmoil simmering within a Birmingham, Alabama home tragically boiled over, culminating in the death of 21-year-old TimDarius Theophilus Gamble. A Black male, Gamble was fatally shot on the evening of April 13th at a residence in the Pratt City neighborhood. The incident, which would be recorded as Birmingham's 26th homicide of the year, unfolded around 8:00 p.m. at a home on Avenue H.
When officers from the Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct arrived, they found Gamble unresponsive in the backyard, lying beside a vehicle. Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The subsequent investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a family dispute as the catalyst. Detectives determined that an ongoing conflict between Tim'Darius Gamble and his mother had escalated to a fatal confrontation. This led to the identification of two suspects: his 45-year-old mother, Micia Sharika Gamble, and her 59-year-old boyfriend, Gregory Peck. Two days after the shooting, on April 15, 2020, both Micia Gamble and Gregory Peck were taken into custody and formally charged with murder. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office issued murder warrants for both individuals, and they were each held on a $75,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
The legal proceedings that followed saw a divergence in the paths of the two accused. Gregory Peck ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge of murder and was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Tim'Darius Gamble. Micia Gamble, however, took her case to trial, where her defense attorney argued that she had acted in self-defense. The prosecution presented counter-evidence that persuaded a Jefferson County jury of her guilt. She was convicted of murdering her son. Her sentencing was scheduled for early January of 2023, bringing a close to a case that underscored the devastating potential of domestic violence.
