Christopher Perry, a 33-year-old Black man, was killed in Birmingham on July 23, 2017, in a shooting that unfolded in the early-morning hours inside a home in the Powderly area. Reports place the violence around 1:50 a.m. at a residence in the 2300 block of 17th Street West, where officers from Birmingham’s West Precinct were sent on a call about a person who had been shot. When police arrived, they found Perry on the floor of the house with a gunshot wound.
The scene was described in later reporting as a house where drinking and drug use had been going on, a detail that gave the case the feel of a night that spun badly out of control before sunrise.
In the days that followed, Perry’s death moved from the shock of a street-level homicide investigation to a named suspect and a formal charge. Birmingham police announced that 44-year-old Earl Parnell had been arrested in connection with the killing. He was charged with murder and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he was reported to be held on a $75,000 bond.
