In the late summer of 2020, the life of 35-year-old Justin Lanier Douglas was tragically cut short. On August 29, 2020, two men broke into his home at the Sun Valley Apartments in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with the intent to rob him at gunpoint. During the commission of the robbery, a struggle ensued, and Douglas was shot. He was quickly transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries the following day, on August 30, 2020.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit promptly began an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the swift identification and arrest of one suspect, 25-year-old Devonte Montel Hinton, who was charged with capital murder. The search for the second individual involved in the fatal robbery continued for over a month. Investigators eventually identified the second suspect as 20-year-old Caleb Harris. With the assistance of the US Marshalls Task Force, Harris was apprehended and also charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Justin Lanier Douglas.
As the legal process unfolded, the initial capital murder charges against both Hinton and Harris were dismissed. Prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to prove that a robbery had been committed, a necessary element for the capital charge. Consequently, Caleb Harris was reindicted on a lesser charge of felony murder. In April 2024, a jury found Harris not guilty of murder but convicted him of the even lesser charge of manslaughter.
