In the spring of 2020, the life of 25-year-old Ryan Clayton-Brown, a Black male from Hueytown, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Remembered as a quiet, sweet, and easy-going young man, he was a beloved sous chef. His sudden disappearance in May of that year would unravel a story that ended in heartbreak for his family and community.
Ryan was last seen on a Thursday in the Ensley/Fairfield area with two unknown males. A missing person's report was filed over the weekend, sparking concern among his loved ones, including his wife and devoted parents. The search came to a grim conclusion on Sunday, May 17, 2020, when his body was discovered in the 2800 block of 29th Street SW in Birmingham. The discovery of his burned vehicle in Fairfield further pointed to a violent end to his life.
The Birmingham Police Department quickly reclassified the missing person's case as a homicide investigation. Their efforts led to a breakthrough in the case. Detectives identified a suspect, and on May 22, 2020, an arrest warrant was issued for Christopher Deantwon Davis. After remaining at large for several weeks, Davis was taken into custody on June 10, 2020. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Ryan Clayton-Brown and booked into the Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at $250,000.
