Valerie Bridges, 34, a Black woman, stepped out into the winter night outside Mr. Kool's Bar at 1308 State Street in Racine on January 30, 1995. Gunfire cracked the cold air, and responding officers found her suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to St. Mary's hospital, where efforts to save her life fell short and she died of her injuries. In the years since, her name has appeared on the Racine Police Department's roster of cold cases—a reminder of a life cut short on a city sidewalk ...
