In the early morning hours of April 15, 2023, the life of Alexis Marie Gonzalez Fisher, a 36-year-old Black / African American woman, was tragically cut short in Racine, Wisconsin. Around 5 a.m., police responded to a call about a woman lying in the street and discovered Fisher's body in a roundabout at Spring and State streets. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed to a domestic violence-related
homicide. A witness reported hearing a confrontation between Fisher and a man, followed by a physical fight on the floor of a residence. The two then moved outside, where the man allegedly pointed a gun at Fisher and fired. After she fell to the ground, the man was reportedly heard saying, "Babe, babe, no, no. Are you okay?" before fleeing the scene.
Authorities identified 30-year-old Alejandro Sierra, Fisher's ex-boyfriend, as the suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Just days after the shooting, on April 21, Sierra surrendered to police in a dramatic fashion, laying down in the middle of a street just a few blocks from the Racine Police Department. He was taken into custody and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and use of a dangerous weapon. The firearm believed to have been used in the homicide was also recovered.
Alexis, known to her loved ones as "Lexi," was a mother of five children. Her family remembered her as a talented and artistic person who loved music, singing, and had an infectious laugh. Her sister described her as a hardworking and good mother who "loved really hard," especially when it came to her family and friends. In the wake of her death, a memorial of candles and balloons was created at the roundabout where her life was taken, and a public prayer vigil was held to honor her memory.
