Police respond to gunshots; find a man in his truck dead of a gunshot
In the early evening of November 6, 1996, a single gunshot shattered the quiet of a Virginia Beach neighborhood, marking the tragic end of 26-year-old Louis Anthony Barone's life. A white male, Barone was discovered slumped in his dark-colored 1992 GMC pickup on Castilian Drive, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Emergency services rushed him to Virginia Beach General Hospital, but his life could not be saved. The State Medical Examiner's Office would later rule his death a homicide.
Witnesses at the scene provided a chilling, albeit brief, account of the events that followed the sound of gunfire at approximately 5:45 p.m. They described seeing a white male hastily exiting Barone's pickup truck and climbing into the passenger side of a waiting vehicle, a light blue or silver Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro, distinguished by a loud exhaust system, was driven by a second individual and sped away from the scene. This fleeting glimpse is the only description of the potential suspects law enforcement has ever been able to release to the public.
Despite the passage of time, the murder of Louis Anthony Barone remains an open and unsolved case. The Virginia Beach Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit continues to seek information from the public that might lead to a breakthrough. No arrests have ever been made, and no suspects have been officially named in the decades since the killing. The identities of the man who pulled the trigger and the driver of the getaway car remain a mystery, leaving a lingering sense of injustice for a life cut short.
