A man is found murdered in his home
In the late summer of 1989, the quiet Chimney Hill neighborhood of Virginia Beach was rocked by the discovery of a young man's untimely death. On Friday, August 12, 1989, the body of 24-year-old Morriel McClain, an African-American male, was found in his home on Smokey Chamber Drive. An investigation determined that McClain had been shot, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. Authorities believe he was last seen alive two days prior, on August 10, 1989.
Witnesses reported seeing an unidentified man at McClain's residence the day before his body was discovered. This individual, now considered a person of interest, was described as a Black male in his mid-20s, standing approximately six feet tall with a muscular build and short black hair. He was reportedly wearing a red jumpsuit with a distinctive round red and white patch on the front pocket.
The man was seen leaving McClain's home in a newer model red Dodge Shadow, donning a dark blue or black baseball-style cap as he departed. Despite these detailed descriptions, the person of interest has never been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with Morriel McClain's murder. The case has remained unsolved for decades, a lingering mystery for the Virginia Beach community and a source of enduring questions for investigators.
