A 12 year old dies as a result of arson
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 24, 2003, a devastating fire engulfed a townhome in the 800 block of Hampstead Court in the Weblin Place neighborhood of Virginia Beach. First responders arrived at approximately 3:42 a.m. to find the home fully ablaze. Inside, they discovered the body of 12-year-old Jonathan Anthony Pelham, a Black male. An autopsy later confirmed that the young boy had died from smoke inhalation.
Investigators with the fire department quickly determined that the fire was not accidental and had been intentionally set, turning the case into a homicide investigation. Jonathan was described as a large child for his age, standing at 5'8' and weighing 302 pounds, with brown eyes and short black hair. His death was a result of the deliberate and malicious act of an unknown individual or individuals who set fire to his home.
Despite the clear evidence of arson and the tragic loss of a young life, the case of Jonathan Anthony Pelham's death has remained unsolved for years. Law enforcement officials have continued to list it as a cold case, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the fire that claimed the life of the Virginia Beach boy. The investigation into who is responsible for the senseless act remains open.
