In the early hours of March 5, 2026, the life of 26-year-old Shane Winston Brooks was tragically cut short in his Virginia Beach home. A graduate of Old Dominion University and a Staff Sergeant in the Virginia National Guard with a decade of service, including a tour in Iraq, Shane was a man known for his adventurous spirit and kind heart. His death resulted from a gunshot wound that occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in the Lynnhaven area of the city.
Responding to a call from 19-year-old Ember McSpadden, who reported she had accidentally shot her partner while they were playing a game, Virginia Beach police officers arrived at a residence on Virginia Beach Boulevard to find Shane deceased at the scene. McSpadden was subsequently arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. The preliminary investigation suggested that an unintended discharge of a firearm led to the fatal incident.
Shane's family remembers him as the "glue that held them together," a supportive figure who stepped up after the passing of his father during his teenage years. He was an avid marathon runner, a licensed pilot, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His unique skills as a certified cyber hacker and master lock picker were often called upon by friends and family. A GoFundMe was established to assist his family with final expenses. An appeal hearing for McSpadden's bail was scheduled for March 17.
