In the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, what began as an attempt to aid a friend in a domestic dispute ended in tragedy for 18-year-old Elijah Deloach. The young man, a senior at Cheltenham High School just weeks from graduation, was fatally shot after he accompanied his friend's sisters to her apartment on Henry Avenue. The group had gone to intervene in an altercation between the woman and her boyfriend.
The incident unfolded on a Tuesday evening when a woman, who was being
physically assaulted by her boyfriend, 23-year-old Kione Gary, called her family for help. In a brave attempt to de-escalate the situation, Deloach and the woman's sisters arrived at the fourth-floor apartment. However, their presence was met with immediate violence. As Deloach entered the apartment, Gary allegedly brandished a handgun and fired a single shot, striking the teen in the chest. Following the shooting, Gary reportedly jumped from the fourth-story balcony to escape but was not injured.
Deloach was transported by a private vehicle to Roxborough Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement who arrived at the scene found Gary, who was armed, and took him into custody. He has since been charged with murder, aggravated assault, strangulation, and other related offenses. Friends and family remember Elijah Deloach as a protective and courageous young man who was looking forward to his future. His father described him as a loving son who went to the apartment that night with the intention of helping and protecting his friend.
