On January 8, 2009, Lamar Smith, a 29-year-old resident of North Point Breeze in Pittsburgh, was killed by police during a tense nine-hour standoff. The incident began following an argument between Smith and his girlfriend in their shared apartment. Distressed and armed, Smith refused to comply with police commands and barricaded himself inside the apartment, prompting officers to call in SWAT and hostage negotiators out of concern for the girlfriend’s safety.
