In the early hours of a Sunday morning in June 2012, the vibrant atmosphere of a block party in Northwest Philadelphia was shattered by a barrage of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, 31-year-old Eric Johnson lay dead, a victim of the shootout that erupted on the 3200 block of North Spangler Street. The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:18 a.m.
on June 24, also left three other men wounded.
Reports from the scene indicated that the gathering had devolved into a violent exchange, with more than 40 shots fired. Arriving officers discovered a scene of panic, with people fleeing for safety. Johnson, a resident of the 2700 block of N. 29th Street, was found with gunshot wounds to his head and body and was pronounced dead at the scene just over ten minutes after the shooting began. The three other victims, a 39-year-old man shot in the ankle, a 19-year-old man struck in the hand, thigh, and buttock, and a 35-year-old man shot in the leg, were all transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Philadelphia police reported that no arrests had been made, and a motive for the violence remained unclear. Investigators at the time were looking into the circumstances that led to the deadly altercation. Despite the passage of time, publicly available information and news reports have not indicated that any suspects have been identified or that any arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Eric Johnson. The case remains a grim reminder of the gun violence that plagued the city that year, with Johnson's death marking the 181st homicide in Philadelphia in 2012.
