In December 2014, a grim discovery was made in a Southwest Philadelphia self-storage facility, bringing a violent end to the life of 69-year-old James Williams. The manager of the Locker Room Self Storage on South 62nd Street came across a 1986 GMC Savana van and, upon investigating, found Williams inside, lying face down with his hands and legs bound behind him. Paramedics were called to the scene and pronounced him dead.
The case was immediately investigated as a homicide.
Investigators determined that Williams, a man from West Philadelphia, had died from blunt force trauma to the head and also had facial injuries. Although he had a home address, he primarily used it for mail and had been living out of his van at the storage facility where he also worked as a security guard. A friend described him as a longtime member of the State Burners Motorcycle Club and mentioned that he kept his motorcycle at the facility. This friend expressed shock, stating they were unaware of anyone who would have wanted to harm Williams and believed that due to his nature, it would have taken more than one person to overpower him.
In the initial stages of the investigation, the Philadelphia police did not have any suspects in custody. Despite the clear signs of a violent struggle and the distinct circumstances surrounding his death, information about any persons of interest or arrests has not been publicly released in the years following the incident. The investigation into the murder of James Williams remains ongoing, leaving the question of who was responsible for his death unanswered.
