In the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, what began as an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in May 2016 was shattered by an act of brutal violence that claimed the life of 24-year-old Nafees Johnson. A Black man, Johnson resided in the nearby Strawberry Mansion area, just a couple of blocks from where his life would be tragically cut short.
Around 2:30 p.m. on May 10th, police responded to a call of a person with a gun at the intersection of 30th and Oxford Streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds that had struck his face, chest, arms, and legs. Medics rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Just after 3:00 p.m., Nafees Johnson was pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene described the shooter as a Black male who was wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. After the shooting, he was seen fleeing the area, heading west on Oxford Street.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of the person responsible for Johnson's death. A reward of $20,000 was offered for information that would result in an arrest and conviction in the case. However, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of a suspect in the years that have followed. The case of who killed Nafees Johnson remains unresolved.
