Winston Dewayne Marsh, a 29-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, was fatally wounded on the night of May 9, 2011, in the city’s West End area, and he died several hours later on May 10 at Baptist Princeton Medical Center. The shooting unfolded near the Shell station on Lomb Avenue across from Princeton Hospital, in a stretch of neighborhood that police believed held the answer to what had happened.
According to the public plea Birmingham authorities made in the days after the killing, Marsh was seen running from an alley behind the station after being shot in the upper right thigh. He made it inside the gas station and collapsed behind the cashier’s bulletproof glass, badly hurt and losing blood fast, before paramedics rushed him to the hospital.
What stayed with investigators was how close the violence seemed to home. Police said Marsh lived only a few blocks from where he fell, and Chief A.C. Roper publicly said they were confident somebody nearby knew why he had been targeted and who was responsible. Detectives said they had made progress in understanding parts of the case, but the two central questions still hung over it: who shot him, and why. The way police described it, this was not treated as some mystery with no witnesses at all, but as a neighborhood killing in which fear or silence was keeping the truth just out of reach.
In the years since, the case has remained unresolved in public reporting. I found no credible online reports showing an arrest, no named suspect publicly identified by authorities, and no later charges, trial, or conviction tied to Marsh’s killing. The available reporting instead leaves his death suspended in that final run to the Shell station, with police insisting someone knew the story and yet no public breakthrough ever arriving.
