Winston Dewayne Marsh, a 29-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, was fatally wounded on the night of May 9, 2011, in the city’s West End area, and he died several hours later on May 10 at Baptist Princeton Medical Center. The shooting unfolded near the Shell station on Lomb Avenue across from Princeton Hospital, in a stretch of neighborhood that police believed held the answer to what had happened.
