On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2011, in Oklahoma City, 36-year-old African-American woman Geneva Bowen was killed in the place she lived, on a holiday when much of the city had slowed for family gatherings and quiet streets. Thanksgiving that year fell on a Thursday, and while most homes were filled with the sounds and smells of celebration, somewhere in the city the day ended in violence that would later be recorded simply as a “death by force.”
