In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of 20-year-old Dusten Fuentes was tragically cut short. On June 28, 2016, Fuentes and another man were riding bicycles near East Independence Street and North Pittsburg Avenue when they were targeted in a shooting. A passenger in a passing car opened fire, striking Fuentes and wounding his companion. Fuentes was rushed to St.
John Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:10 a.m.
At the time of the incident, it was reported that both men were riding stolen bicycles. It was also suggested that the two may have been intoxicated and involved in taking easily accessible items from the area, as well as possibly confronting people on the street. A federal grand jury indicted Zane Patrick Yargee, a 30-year-old member of the Muscogee Nation from Tulsa. Yargee was charged with first-degree murder in Indian Country and with causing a death by using and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. The indictment brought a long-awaited step towards justice for Dusten Fuentes and his family, reopening the narrative of that fateful night with the prospect of legal resolution. The FBI and Tulsa Police Department were credited with the investigation that led to the charges against Yargee.
