On the evening of September 30, 2022, 18-year-old Fedro Givens, a male, was at the Echo Trail Apartments near 61st and Highway 169 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was around 7:30 PM when the young man, who had recently graduated from Union High School with plans to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, encountered another teenager. Witnesses later recounted that Kaleb Pelton, who was 16 years old at the time, approached Givens, asked him a question, and then brandished a gun, shooting him multiple times
in the chest. Givens was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. The youngest of 15 children, he was remembered by his family for his cheerful and comedic personality.
The investigation into the death of Fedro Givens led Tulsa police to identify Kaleb Pelton as the primary suspect. After the shooting, Pelton fled the state and was later located and arrested in Elk Grove, California. Authorities also sought a witness who was with Pelton at the time of the incident and had fled with him. After releasing security video to the public, the police were able to identify and question the witness. He provided a statement about the crime and was subsequently released, with no charges expected to be filed against him.
In April 2024, Kaleb Pelton, by then 18 years old, stood trial for the murder of Fedro Givens. A Tulsa County jury found him guilty of the fatal shooting. For the grieving family of Fedro Givens, the conviction brought a measure of justice, though it could not erase the pain of their loss. They remembered him as a non-threatening person who was not involved in dangerous activities, struggling to understand the senseless act of violence that took his life. The community mourned with them, remembering a young man with a promising future cut short.
