On October 29, 1966, Anita Taylor, aged 20, was tragically found severely beaten and apparently raped at her home at 415 Ludlow Avenue, Springfield, Ohio. The horrifying discovery was made by her husband, Larry Taylor, upon returning from his late-night work shift. Anita's 18-month-old son, Aaron, was also found beaten in his crib but managed to survive the attack.
The back door of the home was found ajar, but there was no indication of forced entry, which led investigators to believe that Anita may have known her attacker.
The events of that night were especially brutal. Anita was found on her bedroom floor, barely alive, with her throat crushed, possibly by someone’s foot, which ultimately led to her death due to aspiration of blood into her lungs. Tragically, Anita succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital by emergency services. Larry, upon finding his wife in such a state, ran to a nearby bar for help, returning with his coworkers to the scene before calling the police. Despite the prompt efforts, Anita was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The investigation revealed chilling details of the attack. The assailant appeared to have used a pop bottle, and possibly their hands and feet, to assault Anita. A partial fingerprint was recovered from a light bulb on the back porch, suggesting that the attacker unscrewed it to avoid detection. Despite extensive questioning of individuals and following numerous leads, the case went cold, and Anita's killer was never identified. Over the years, her family has sought justice, and efforts have been made to employ advanced forensic methods to solve the crime, including DNA testing that cleared her husband as a suspect.
Larry struggled in the aftermath of Anita's death, and Aaron was eventually raised by his maternal grandmother. In adulthood, Aaron Taylor has actively pursued answers about his mother's death, creating a website dedicated to her memory and collaborating with authorities to keep her case alive. In recent years, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Cold Case Unit has revisited Anita's case, bringing renewed hope to her surviving family. With advancements in forensic technology and the dedication of law enforcement, Aaron Taylor hopes that one day the person responsible will be brought to justice, providing the closure that his family deserves.
