Clarence Ray Oliver, a 25-year-old man, was killed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on a late summer day that marked the beginning of a violent criminal history for his killer. His life was cut short on September 11, 1995, during a heated argument with a 21-year-old acquaintance, Raymond Eugene Johnson. The confrontation escalated with terrifying speed, ending a chapter of one young man’s life and setting the course for the destruction of others.
The two men were together in Oklahoma City
when the argument broke out. As tensions rose, Johnson brandished a gun and threatened to shoot Clarence. Sensing the immediate danger, Clarence got into his car and attempted to drive away, a desperate bid to escape the escalating violence. But he was not successful. Johnson fired his gun into the moving vehicle, a bullet striking Clarence through the passenger side window.
Wounded, Clarence lost control of his car, which veered off the road and crashed into a nearby ditch. He would not be found until the following day. The discovery of the wrecked car and Clarence’s body inside launched a homicide investigation by the Oklahoma City police. Within about two weeks, detectives identified Raymond Johnson as a suspect and brought him in for questioning. Johnson was subsequently arrested for the murder.
The legal proceedings that followed did not result in a murder conviction for Johnson. Instead, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. For taking Clarence Ray Oliver's life, Johnson was sentenced to 20 years in prison. This outcome, however, was not the final chapter in Johnson's story of violence, nor was it the last time a family would be left to grieve because of his actions.
Johnson was paroled in 2005, having served only about half of his sentence for killing Clarence. After his release, he moved to Tulsa and his pattern of violence resurfaced. In 2007, he murdered his ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Brooke Whitaker, and her seven-month-old daughter, Kya. Johnson subjected the young mother to a brutal, hours-long attack with a claw hammer before dousing her and her infant daughter with gasoline and setting their home on fire.
For these horrific crimes, the justice system responded with its fullest measure. In 2009, Raymond Eugene Johnson was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson. The jury sentenced him to death for the murders and life in prison for the arson. After years of failed appeals, Johnson's fate was sealed. He was executed by lethal injection on May 14, 2026, at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. His death marked the end of a criminal path that began with the senseless killing of Clarence Ray Oliver more than three decades earlier.
