In the early morning hours of October 4, 2014, the life of 19-year-old DeQuinn L. Mackey was tragically cut short in a shooting at the Quail Lake Apartments in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The incident, which unfolded shortly before 1:30 a.m. near N.W. 140th and Penn, stemmed from a dispute between two men over a suspected stolen cellphone. The argument escalated, leading to gunfire that would have fatal consequences for Mackey and injure another individual.
Responding to a disturbance at the apartment complex, police officers discovered that two victims had been shot and were transported to a local hospital by a private vehicle. Upon arrival at the hospital, DeQuinn L. Mackey was pronounced dead. The second victim, 18-year-old Natalie Martin, was treated for a gunshot wound to her hand and was subsequently released. Mackey's death marked the 45th homicide in Oklahoma City that year.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led police to identify a suspect. The following morning, 19-year-old Kamron L. Carter was apprehended during a traffic stop in the northwest part of the city. He was taken into custody and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on a complaint of first-degree murder in connection with the death of DeQuinn L. Mackey.
