Summary based on 6 sources
Nikeyttia L. Jones, known to her loved ones as “Key-Key,” was a 27-year-old woman from Buena Vista Township, Michigan, remembered for her beautiful soul and an infectious smile that could light up any room. A loving mother to her son, De'Anthony, she was a cherished daughter, sister, and aunt who found her greatest joy in spending time with her family and friends. Nikeyttia had a passion for life that she expressed through her love of listening to music and dancing. Her warmth and vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the fortune of knowing her.

The evening of Friday, October 23, 2026, turned tragic on the west side of Saginaw. At approximately 9:15 p.m., Nikeyttia was in a vehicle with 19-year-old Eric Romero Jr. near the intersection of Mershon and Cooper streets. In a sudden burst of violence, one or more unknown individuals opened fire on their vehicle. The car was riddled with bullets, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then careened into a utility pole on the corner of the intersection, the sound of the crash echoing in the night.

When Saginaw Police Department officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the chaotic scene, they found both Nikeyttia and Eric inside the wrecked vehicle, each suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. They were immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Eric Romero Jr. succumbed to his injuries later that same night. Nikeyttia was admitted in critical condition and began a harrowing fight for her life.

For four days, Nikeyttia clung to life while her family prayed for a miracle. Her injuries, however, were too severe to overcome. On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Nikeyttia L. Jones passed away, becoming the second victim of the violent ambush. Her death was officially ruled a homicide, and detectives began investigating the case as a double murder.

The Saginaw Police Department’s Major Case Unit took charge of the investigation, processing the scene for evidence and seeking to understand the circumstances that led to the shooting. The attack on Nikeyttia and Eric marked the 11th and 12th homicides in the city of Saginaw for 2026. At the time, their unsolved murders stood in stark contrast to the city’s other cases that year, nearly all of which had resulted in identified or charged suspects. This left investigators and the community searching for answers in a case that had gone cold almost as soon as it happened.

The loss of two young lives in a single, senseless act of violence sent a wave of grief through the community. Both the Jones and Romero families were left to mourn and navigate a future without their loved ones, all while hoping for justice. Nikeyttia's family gathered to say their final goodbyes and celebrate her life, remembering the joy and love she brought into the world during her short time in it.

As of late October 2026, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Nikeyttia Jones and Eric Romero Jr., and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Saginaw Police Department's investigation remains open and active. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. Individuals can contact the Saginaw Police Department directly at 989-759-1289 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245.
