Camerie K. Crawford, a 17-year-old African American girl, was tragically shot and killed on January 17, 2020, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, Camerie was standing in a vacant lot in the 6700-block of South Parnell Avenue when three males approached her in a silver-colored sedan. One of the males exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking Camerie in the head, neck, and back.
She was rushed to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into Camerie's death revealed that the shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. on that fateful Friday evening. Witnesses reported seeing the silver sedan drive up to the vacant lot before the three males exited the vehicle. After the shots were fired, the suspects quickly fled the scene, heading northbound on Parnell and eastbound on Marquette. Despite the efforts of the emergency responders and medical staff, Camerie succumbed to her injuries at 7:55 p.m. An autopsy conducted the following day confirmed that she died from the gunshot wounds, and her death was officially ruled a homicide.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Camerie's murder. The Chicago Police Department's Area South detectives continue to investigate the case, but the suspects remain at large. The lack of immediate arrests and the ongoing investigation highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving such violent crimes.
