In the early morning hours of June 24, 2017, in Nashville, Tennessee, 14-year-old Clayton Gangji was fatally shot while sitting in a parked SUV. The young man and three other individuals were in the vehicle located at the intersection of Hadley Avenue and Old Hickory Boulevard when the incident occurred.
The person responsible for the shooting was identified as 19-year-old Zachary Able. According to police reports, Able was handling a pistol inside the car when it discharged.
The bullet passed through Able's hand before striking Gangji. Both were transported to Summit Medical Center, where Gangji succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, Able claimed that they had been victims of a robbery. However, upon further investigation, detectives uncovered inconsistencies in his story. In a subsequent interview, Able admitted that his initial account was false and acknowledged that he was holding the firearm when it went off. Police believe that Able and Gangji had been awake all night with the others present in the vehicle.
Following his confession, Zachary Able was arrested and charged with criminal homicide in connection with the death of Clayton Gangji.
