On a Thursday night in Nashville, Tennessee, specifically November 7, 2019, a burst of gunfire inside an apartment at the Village on the Green complex on Ed Temple Boulevard ended the life of 37-year-old Darrelle Groves. Emergency responders rushed Groves to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal.
Another man, 20-year-old Tyontez Moore, was also wounded in the shooting.
He was taken by a private vehicle to Summit Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound and was later released. Investigators at the scene noted a strong smell of marijuana in the apartment, leading them to consider that the violence may have been related to a drug transaction.
As the investigation progressed, Metro Nashville police detained several individuals for questioning, including Moore and other witnesses who were present during the shooting. The vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects was located at the same hospital where Moore was treated, and it contained evidence related to the crime.
The investigation led to charges of criminal homicide being filed against two men: 22-year-old Rhazhaan Pittman-Valentine and the injured Tyontez Moore. According to police, the motive behind the fatal encounter was an intended robbery of Groves. Authorities stated that both Pittman-Valentine and Moore fired weapons during the incident that resulted in Darrelle Groves's death.
