Aliou Barry, a 19-year-old Pike High School student and football player, was a young man with a future ahead of him, grounded in his faith and community. He was a member of the Class of 2025 at Pike, where he played on the varsity football team as a defensive back. A Hudl profile shows him listed as a cornerback, strong safety, and free safety for the Red Devils. Beyond school and sports, Aliou was a devoted member of the Indianapolis Muslim community.
He had been a student at the Al-Hikmah Islamic Center since he was a young boy, learning the Quran and growing in his faith. His life, however, was tragically cut short.
The afternoon of Friday, October 23, 2026, was shattered by the sound of gunfire on the northwest side of Indianapolis. Just before 5:30 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department who were at their district headquarters heard what they believed was automatic gunfire. The officers rushed to the 4100 block of Lafayette Road, near Georgetown Road. In the parking lot of a strip mall, across from the former Lafayette Square Mall, they found Aliou Barry inside a black Chrysler 200. He was in the driver's seat, suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
Police officers immediately began lifesaving efforts, but when medics arrived, they pronounced Aliou dead at the scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office later formally identified him. The shooting occurred in a busy retail area that housed an international grocery store, restaurants, and other businesses, but police noted that no buildings were struck by the gunfire. As investigators began to process the scene, heartbroken family members arrived, trying to comprehend the sudden and violent loss of their loved one.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation into Aliou's homicide. In the immediate aftermath, detectives canvassed the area, searching for witnesses and any available surveillance video that might have captured the incident or a suspect's vehicle. Police officials stated they believed the shooting was an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. "Somebody made the intentional decision to pull the trigger against somebody, and a life has been lost," said IMPD Officer Drew Brown. The department offered resources to Aliou's grieving family to help them through the traumatic event.
In the days following the shooting, Aliou’s community mourned his passing. The Al-Hikmah Islamic Center held a Salatul Janazah, a traditional Muslim funeral prayer, for him. Members of the center who had watched him grow up expressed their profound sadness over the loss of a young man they considered part of the community's future. A small memorial of flowers and a teddy bear was placed in the parking spot where Aliou’s car had been. Community members called for unity and for anyone with information to come forward to help prevent another family from experiencing such a loss.
As of the latest reports in October 2026, the investigation into Aliou Barry's murder is ongoing. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
