Michael Deandre Cowling Jr., a young man from Morganton, North Carolina, is remembered by his family as a magnetic and joyful presence. Known as “Mikey,” the 20-year-old male had a gift for making people laugh and was described by his father, Mike Cowling, as someone who would "light up a room." A 2024 graduate of Freedom High School, his family said he was generous, funny, and a people person who was loved by his community. His sister, Deja Cowling, recalled how he always made everyone smile and was always cracking jokes. A GoFundMe page created for his family described him as a "light in every room, a son, a brother."

In the early hours of Saturday, October 10, 2026, Michael’s life was cut tragically short. He and his sister had gone to a "Pink Out" party in the Kings Creek neighborhood of Lenoir, located in the 4800 block of Grandin Road. The event was described as an unchaperoned homecoming party for Hibriten High School students and was attended by an estimated 70 to 80 young people. Around 12:45 a.m., a dispute reportedly broke out. Michael's father later said his son was trying to protect a friend from being jumped when a single gunshot was fired.

Deja Cowling heard the shot and then saw people running. Deputies from the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office arrived to a chaotic scene where most of the partygoers had already fled. They found Michael suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders airlifted him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. No other injuries were reported from the incident.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office immediately launched a homicide investigation. Detectives recovered at least one firearm at the scene and began the difficult task of piecing together the events of the night. With so many potential witnesses having left the party, investigators issued a public plea for assistance. Sheriff Kevin Bean and his office extended their prayers to Michael's family and urged anyone who attended the party or had any information to come forward, stating that "Even the smallest detail could help detectives move the investigation forward." Michael's father also made a heart-wrenching plea: “How can nobody … 80 kids … How can nobody see a life be taken and not come forward and not say anything.”

Just two days after the shooting, the sheriff's office announced an arrest. A 16-year-old was taken into custody and charged with murder. Authorities stated the teen would be charged as an adult, though his name was withheld in initial reports due to his age. The investigation remained active as detectives continued to gather evidence and establish the full circumstances of the shooting. The Alcohol Law Enforcement agency also joined the inquiry after reports that minors were consuming alcohol at the unsupervised gathering.

The sudden and violent loss of Michael devastated his parents, Christy and Michael Cowling Sr., his sister, and all who knew him. “He's supposed to bury me not the other way around,” his mother said. The Burke County Schools district, from which Michael had graduated, released a statement expressing sorrow over his passing. “It is a true tragedy when someone is killed under such circumstances, but especially someone so young,” a spokesperson said, adding that the district was praying for his family and for law enforcement. The case is now proceeding through the court system. As of October 2026, investigators continued to seek information from the public.
