In the early morning hours of Monday, January 26, 2026, the life of Michael Eugene Watson Jr., a 46-year-old man from Lenoir, North Carolina, was tragically cut short in what was described as a senseless act of violence. Deputies from the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of Honeycomb Place around 2:09 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Watson suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of those at the scene, paramedics pronounced him dead.
An investigation into the shooting led authorities to a man in his vehicle in the driveway of another home. That individual, identified as 46-year-old Joshua Barrett Lovins of Lenoir, was taken into custody and has since been charged with murder in connection with Watson's death. Lovins is currently being held at the Caldwell County Detention Center without bond. The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet released details on a possible motive.
Known affectionately as "Big Mike," Michael Eugene Watson Jr. was remembered for his open heart and love for people. He had a long career in the grocery industry and was a passionate outdoorsman who found peace in nature, particularly while fishing. His greatest joy was said to be his two daughters.
