Philip John Dodson was a father, a son, and a brother who, despite enjoying travel, always remained close to his St. Louis roots. Born on September 19, 1983, he grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri, where he formed many lifelong friendships. Those who loved him describe him as strong, brave, and righteous. His family, who were left heartbroken by his sudden death, said he was dearly loved. The most important person in his life was his young daughter, Izzy, who, according to family, "loved her dada with all of her heart." Philip worked within the contractors and construction community in the Fenton area.

On the evening of Friday, October 9, 2026, a dispute that began on the road escalated with tragic finality just outside the place Philip, 43, called home. At around 7:30 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Ashwood Drive, a quiet street in a Jefferson County portion of Fenton. They arrived to find Philip J. Dodson on the ground with what appeared to be fatal gunshot wounds. The incident was the culmination of a road rage altercation that had started earlier. The other driver involved had followed Philip to his home.

Neighbors who were returning home from dinner came upon a car blocking the road. When they asked the man what was happening, he walked up to their window and said, "I just killed a man." The neighbors initially thought there had been a traffic accident but then saw bullet holes and called 911. One neighbor described the scene as traumatic, saying the sight of his neighbor's body was something that would stick with him. Investigators from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Philip was unarmed when he was shot twice. An autopsy performed the next day officially ruled his death a homicide.

The man who had spoken to the neighbors, 71-year-old Michael F. Miller of Fredericktown, remained at the scene and was arrested by deputies. As he was being detained, he told a deputy, “I shot him, gun’s in the front seat of my car.” According to the probable-cause statement, Miller later admitted to investigators that he shot Philip at least twice while still inside his own vehicle. A witness reported hearing a "pop," seeing a flash, and then hearing a second "pop." Though Miller reportedly claimed self-defense to the neighbors at the scene, he was taken into custody without incident.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the killing, which was the 12th death connected to 11 homicide investigations in the county that year. Captain Matt Moore of the sheriff's office noted that while they had the suspect's interview, the investigation was ongoing as they reviewed video evidence to piece together the moments that led to the shooting. Michael F. Miller was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro and held without bond.

In the wake of his death, Philip’s family announced a visitation to be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Jay B. Smith Funeral Home Fenton Chapel. He is survived by his daughter Izzy, his parents Kristin Dodson and John W. Dodson Jr., his stepmother Kathy, his siblings Greg and Michelle Dodson, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Instead of flowers, the family requested that people consider donating to a GoFundMe page set up in his memory. As of October 2026, the case against Michael F. Miller is proceeding through the court system.
