In a quiet neighborhood in Fenton, Missouri, a dispute over unwelcome guests escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 25-year-old Austin Vines and his dog. The incident unfolded at a home on Greenhurst Court where Vines lived with his fiancée and several other roommates. The household had become increasingly uncomfortable with the extended stay of two newcomers, who were described as 'meth addicts.'
The collective decision was made to ask them to leave, a request that unfortunately sparked a violent chain of events.
The initial confrontation led to a fistfight, after which the two individuals left, but not before threatening to return with firearms. They made good on their promise, coming back with relatives, including a man identified as Tony D. Hager. A physical altercation ensued on the front lawn, during which Vines reportedly saw that Hager was armed.
As the fight intensified, Vines' dog, Nova, a boxer mix, attempted to join in. Hager allegedly responded by shooting the dog. Witnessing his dog being shot enraged Vines, who continued to fight. In the ensuing chaos, Vines was shot twice. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, January 17, 2022. His dog also died from its wounds.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the St. Louis County Police Department. Through witness statements, investigators identified Tony D. Hager, then 22, as the shooter. Hager was subsequently located in Ozark County and arrested on January 19, 2022. He was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
