Marquelis Shaquan Barnes, a 16-year-old Black male from Columbus, Ohio, tragically lost his life on June 29, 2017. Born on October 24, 2000, Marquelis was a rising senior at Focus Learning Academy and was known for his love of music, basketball, and spending time outdoors. He was affectionately called "Quel-Bandz" by those close to him. His family and friends remember him as a kind and gentle spirit who was deeply loved.
On the night of his death, Columbus Police officers responded to
reports of multiple gunshots fired at a BP gas station located at 3140 E. Main St. Upon arrival, they found a juvenile victim suffering from gunshot wounds. This victim was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition. Approximately an hour later, officers discovered a second victim in the front yard of a nearby address. This individual was later identified as Marquelis Shaquan Barnes, a 16-year-old Black male. He had also sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at 3:06 a.m. by emergency responders.
The circumstances surrounding Marquelis' death remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed any arrests or identified suspects in connection with the case. The Columbus Police Department continues to seek information that could help solve this homicide and bring justice to Marquelis Barnes and his grieving family.
