The incident occurred at a residence on West Rich Street, near the old city prison. As Patrolman Campbell entered the yard, a 19-year-old son of the household opened fire with a shotgun, fatally wounding him.
The suspect, the 19-year-old son, was arrested and later sentenced to life imprisonment.
