In the early morning hours of September 2, 2026, the body of 49-year-old Evans Tshongwe was discovered in South Bend Park, a public space located near the Lakewood Amphitheater in southeast Atlanta, Georgia. An Atlanta police officer on a routine patrol of the park around 9:00 a.m. found Mr. Tshongwe lying in a field with a significant amount of blood, having sustained what was later confirmed to be multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency medical personnel who responded to the scene pronounced him deceased. Evans Tshongwe was a male, and reports suggest he was of Malawian origin.

The Atlanta Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Detectives on the scene began to piece together the circumstances surrounding the man's death. As part of their initial investigation, police impounded a Jaguar vehicle that was found parked in an unusual spot within the park. Authorities have not disclosed the ownership of the vehicle or its potential connection to the case. Investigators have stated that they do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. Based on their preliminary findings, they suspect that Mr. Tshongwe and his assailant or assailants likely knew each other.

As of the latest available information, the investigation into the death of Evans Tshongwe is ongoing. Homicide detectives are actively working to identify a suspect or suspects and determine a motive for the shooting. Authorities have been reviewing security camera footage from the park in the hopes of gathering more evidence that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any persons of interest, arrests made, or charges filed in connection with the murder. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation, with many questions still unanswered.
