On the evening of November 26, 2021, Juan Lopez, a 29-year-old male, went to wash his truck and then stopped to deposit money at a Wells Fargo ATM on East Point Street. While at the ATM, he was on the phone with his sister, who was asking about his clothing sizes for his upcoming 30th birthday. During the call, his sister overheard someone demand the keys to his truck. Lopez was heard pleading with the assailant, saying, 'No, bro. Don't do this to me.
I know you.'
Shortly after, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Lopez was shot multiple times. The assailants, described as several men, fled the scene in a silver vehicle. Lopez's wife, Yessica, had spoken to him just moments before he went to the ATM, expressing her concern for his safety as it was getting late. He had reassured her, telling her a man was looking at him and he needed to be aware of his surroundings before ending the call. Emergency services were called, but Juan Lopez succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the murder of Juan Lopez continued for several months. Then, in April 2022, East Point police announced the arrest of 49-year-old Shane Knight. Knight was charged with the murder of Lopez. Authorities stated that Knight was one of a group of men who had pulled up near the ATM and shot Lopez before fleeing. It was reported that Knight was believed to be the driver of the getaway car. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for others who may have been involved in the fatal shooting.
