In the late morning of November 28, 2023, a dispute in the lobby of a Cobb County hotel escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 27-year-old Demarcus Watson. The male victim was at the Budgetel Inn & Suites on Circle 75 Parkway, near Atlanta, when an argument broke out with another individual. The confrontation turned violent when the other person produced a firearm and shot Watson.

Cobb County Police were dispatched to the hotel at approximately 11:43 a.m. following a report of a person being shot. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Demarcus Watson suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts to render life-saving aid, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The department's Major Crimes Unit initiated an investigation into the homicide.

Initially, the suspect remained unidentified and at large. However, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the days following the shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for Donte Leon Hale of Atlanta. He was charged in connection with the murder of Demarcus Watson. The charges brought against Hale included felony murder and aggravated assault, in addition to two gun-related offenses stemming from a prior felony conviction in DeKalb County in 2003.
