In the early morning hours of April 4, 2022, a sense of dread fell over a Midtown Atlanta neighborhood. Desmond Ramone Key, a 35-year-old man, was walking outside the Dagny Midtown apartment complex on Juniper Street when a dark gray sedan pulled up beside him. At approximately 3 a.m., at least two individuals emerged from the vehicle, brandishing firearms. They robbed Key and then shot him, leaving him on the sidewalk as they fled the scene.
Despite the quick response of emergency services, Key was pronounced deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The Atlanta Police Department immediately launched an extensive investigation, believing the attack to be a targeted robbery. Investigators released surveillance footage showing the dark gray four-door sedan involved in the crime and identified persons of interest. A substantial reward of up to $40,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible. Key was remembered by his wife, Felicia Key, as a beloved father, husband, and business owner. The couple had recently celebrated their six-month wedding anniversary and were making plans to expand their family and their property management business.
After weeks of investigation, a breakthrough came in the case. On June 22, 2022, warrants were issued for 19-year-old Keon Hudson. A week later, on June 29, Hudson was arrested in Norcross by the Atlanta Police Department's Fugitive Unit and the Southeast Regional Fugitive Force. He was subsequently booked into the Fulton County Jail. Hudson faced charges of murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. While Hudson's arrest marked a significant development, the investigation continued as police had initially indicated the involvement of at least two suspects.
