Jerome Kirk, a 20-year-old Black man from Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot on September 6, 2026, while visiting Chicago. The shooting occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. in the 300 block of North Lamon Avenue in the Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side. Kirk was sitting inside a vehicle when an individual approached and opened fire. Chicago police said multiple shots were fired, striking Kirk throughout his body.
Emergency personnel transported Kirk to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries at the hospital. The Cook County medical examiner’s office subsequently identified him as the victim. His killing was one of several fatal shootings reported across Chicago during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
