In the spring of 2007, a dedicated FBI Special Agent, Barry Lee Bush, a 52-year-old male, tragically lost his life in Readington Township, New Jersey, during a perilous operation targeting a crew of brazen bank robbers. On April 5th, Bush and his fellow agents were in the process of apprehending three suspects believed to be responsible for a string of armed robberies in the area. The suspects, who had allegedly used assault weapons in previous heists, were under surveillance as they appeared to be preparing for another robbery at a PNC Bank.
As the law enforcement team moved in to make the arrests, the situation quickly turned chaotic. In a tragic turn of events, it is believed that Bush was fatally wounded by an accidental discharge from another agent's weapon amidst the dynamic and high-stakes arrest. While the suspects were armed with two assault rifles and a handgun, reports indicate that they did not fire their weapons during the confrontation with the agents.
Bush was struck and mortally wounded during the encounter.
In the immediate aftermath, two of the suspects, identified as Wilfredo Berrios, 28, and Michael Cruz, 21, both from New Brunswick, were taken into custody. A third suspect, 22-year-old Francisco Herrera-Genao, also of New Brunswick, managed to flee the scene, prompting a massive manhunt involving numerous law enforcement agencies. Herrera-Genao was successfully apprehended the following day, bringing an end to the search. The three men were subsequently charged in connection with the attempted armed robbery.
