Chris E. Dearmond Sr., a 43-year-old African American man from Springfield, Ohio, was tragically shot to death on March 17, 2012. He was a barber at New Flavor Barber Shop, located at 1833 South Yellow Springs Street. On the day of his death, Dearmond was reportedly alone in the shop when he was shot multiple times, including once in the head. He was quickly flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, but unfortunately, he did not survive the attack.
The incident remains under
investigation by the Springfield Police Department. Police Captain Michael P. Hill urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, but he refused to provide additional details about the case. Dearmond's mother, Charlotte, expressed her hope that the police would arrest her son's killers and bring them to justice.
Friends and community members remember Dearmond as a kind and generous man who often cut hair for free for children who couldn't afford it. The Rev. Robert Buford, a member of Peacekeepers, a national nonviolent initiative, mentioned that the incident might have been the result of tensions that grew from a fight at a bar earlier in the year and another shooting that occurred in February.
Despite his criminal record, friends of Dearmond stated that he had changed and was trying to help the community. His death was deeply felt by his family, including his 11 children and 14 grandchildren, who described him as a good father, grandfather, and husband.
The case is still unsolved, and the Ohio Attorney General's Office has listed it as an unsolved homicide. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Springfield Police Department.
