Vernita Jones, a 60-year-old woman, was killed in an early-morning shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on September 11, 2026. Baton Rouge police said Jones was found suffering from a gunshot wound at approximately 5:54 a.m. in the 1900 block of Ellerslie Drive. She was found dead at the scene, and the Baton Rouge Police Department opened an investigation into the fatal shooting.

Investigators released few details about what happened before Jones was shot. Authorities did not publicly identify where she had been immediately before the shooting, whether she was approached by her attacker, or whether anyone witnessed the gunfire. Police also did not announce what type of firearm was used or disclose evidence indicating why Jones may have been targeted. The circumstances surrounding the encounter therefore remain largely unknown from the information that has been publicly released.

In the initial stages of the investigation, police said they had not identified a suspect and did not know the motive for the killing. No description of a possible gunman or getaway vehicle was released, and authorities did not announce that they had taken any person of interest into custody. Investigators appealed to members of the public who might have information about the shooting to contact the Baton Rouge Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Publicly available reports through September 24, 2026, do not indicate that an arrest has been made in Jones' death, nor do they identify a suspect or report the filing of criminal charges. There consequently have been no publicly reported court proceedings, trial developments, or convictions connected to the case. Her death remains an open shooting investigation based on the most recent information available, with detectives still needing information that could establish who killed her and why.
