On what was supposed to be a joyous celebration of her 37th birthday, Tiffany Thompson, a mother of four, was tragically killed on the evening of Thursday, August 13, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan. Known by her family as a determined and energetic woman who was also a homebody, Tiffany decided to step out to her brother's house for a birthday drink, a rare occasion for her. This decision, documented in her last social media post, unfortunately, led to a fatal encounter.
The celebration took a dark turn just before 9:30 p.m. at a gathering in the 9400 block of Whitcomb on Detroit's west side. An argument erupted, during which 55-year-old Katrena McCree allegedly became involved in the confrontation, pulled out a handgun, and opened fire. Two women were struck by the gunfire. Tiffany Thompson was critically wounded and rushed to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The second woman who was shot survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The violence was brought to an end when another individual at the party intervened.
In the wake of the shooting, Katrena McCree, who was also injured during the incident, was taken to a hospital for treatment before being taken into police custody. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged McCree with second-degree murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and two counts of felony firearm. McCree was arraigned on August 16, 2026, and a bond was set at $200,000 cash/surety. Three days after the fatal shooting, family and friends of Tiffany gathered for a vigil, mourning the mother of four whose life was cut short on the very day she was celebrating another year of life. The case against Katrena McCree is now proceeding through the legal system.
