On a late summer evening in Stahlstown, Pennsylvania, a family dispute turned deadly, leaving a father dead and his son facing a homicide charge. Edward Lawrence Jr., a 59-year-old man, was killed on August 15, 2026, at his home on a rural road. The events of that day unfolded after what was described as a day of bickering between Edward and his wife, Tammy.
Their son, 28-year-old Cody Alan Lawrence, who lived with his parents, intervened in an argument between them, an act that would have fatal consequences.
According to Tammy Lawrence's account to investigators, after another argument late in the day, she heard a loud noise and then saw her husband and son emerge from their home. Edward Lawrence Jr. exclaimed that he had been shot before running to a neighbor's garage, where he was later found deceased by authorities who were called to the scene around 7:45 p.m. An autopsy would later reveal that Edward had sustained a gunshot wound to his back, as well as two stab wounds, also in his back. Cody Lawrence was taken into custody by the Pennsylvania State Police for questioning.
During questioning, Cody Lawrence offered a different version of events, claiming he acted in self-defense. He alleged that he saw his father reaching for a gun in his waistband, and during a struggle over the weapon, it discharged. He also stated that a pocketknife fell from his sweatshirt during the altercation and that his father may have been stabbed. However, investigators found little evidence to support his claim. Troopers who searched the property found a pistol concealed near the front entrance of the home and a folding knife nearby. Authorities stated that there was no plausible explanation of self-defense and that the physical evidence was inconsistent with such a claim. They also noted that there was no indication that Cody's mother was in any immediate physical danger. As a result of the investigation, Cody Alan Lawrence was charged with criminal homicide and, following his arraignment, was sent to the Westmoreland County Prison after being denied bail. A preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for August 28, 2026. The case against him represents a domestic dispute that escalated to a tragic conclusion, leaving a family shattered and a son accused of his father's murder.
