In the fall of 2015, the community of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, was shaken by a tragic event that claimed the life of Richard A. Erb, a 36-year-old man from the neighboring Coal Township. On the evening of Saturday, October 10, 2015, Erb was fatally shot in what was later determined to be a double-murder and suicide.
The incident unfolded when 20-year-old Richard Zimmerman Jr. of Shamokin opened fire, killing his own mother, 42-year-old Joananne Grodzki, and Richard Erb.
After committing these acts, Zimmerman then turned the weapon on himself, taking his own life. The coroner pronounced all three individuals dead at the scene from gunshot wounds to the head.
Authorities confirmed the relationship between Zimmerman and Grodzki, and while the motive for the killings remains unclear, the investigation concluded that Zimmerman was the sole perpetrator. Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs from the building and seeing the gunman briefly exit the home before re-entering. Investigators believe he left the house after shooting Grodzki and Erb, only to return and end his own life. As the suspect died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent legal proceedings.
