In the small town of Stuart, Iowa, a burst of violence on a Tuesday afternoon shattered the community's peace and ended the life of 42-year-old Toni Salazar. On August 18, 2026, law enforcement received reports of shots fired in the 200 block of Southwest Sixth Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Toni Salazar deceased outside a residence. Remembered as a compassionate neighbor who had been helping others just hours before her death, Salazar's sudden and violent end left the community in

She was a beloved wife to LyVandr Salazar and a cherished mother to five children, known affectionately as "Mama T" to many in the community.
The events of that afternoon unfolded chaotically as one of the first responders, Iowa State Patrol Trooper Chase Carruthers, encountered the armed suspect, 46-year-old Austin Nichols Reed of Stuart. Reed, armed with a shotgun, fired at and wounded Trooper Carruthers shortly after the officer's arrival. According to criminal complaints, an individual was speaking with Salazar when Reed approached from behind and shot her. He then allegedly aimed the shotgun at the witness and pulled the trigger, but the weapon failed to fire, allowing the individual to escape. More law enforcement officers quickly arrived on the scene and were able to take Reed into custody while providing emergency medical aid to the injured trooper. Trooper Carruthers was transported to a Des Moines hospital in stable condition.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Austin Reed was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the death of Toni Salazar and attempted murder of a police officer for the shooting of Trooper Carruthers. Reports indicate a history of conflict between Reed and Salazar, with Reed having been charged with third-degree harassment in an incident involving her the previous month.
