In a quiet home in Sheldon, Iowa, the life of 62-year-old Jody Lynn Duskin came to a tragic end on March 23, 2023. A female family member discovered her deceased inside her residence, prompting a 911 call to the O'Brien County Communication Center at approximately 4:00 PM. Authorities arriving at the scene at 604 4th Ave immediately treated the death as a homicide.
An autopsy conducted by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on March 25 confirmed that Jody's death was indeed a homicide, specifically from a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect, Jody's own son, 41-year-old Nathaniel Byron Kassel of Rock Rapids, Iowa. The day after his mother's body was found, Kassel was apprehended in Flandreau, South Dakota. His arrest was made on two Iowa warrants for murder in the 1st degree and felon in possession of a firearm. Disturbing court documents later revealed that Kassel had communicated with other family members the night before his mother's death, stating his intention to kill her. A phone conversation was also overheard in which Kassel expressed that he had made a mistake and hurt someone.
Following his arrest, Kassel was extradited from South Dakota back to O'Brien County, Iowa, to face the charges against him. When he was taken into custody, he was found in possession of his mother's car and two handguns from her residence. Initially, Kassel pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also included operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.
However, in a turn of events, Nathaniel Kassel later changed his plea to guilty of first-degree murder. In September 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his mother, Jody Duskin. The charges of possessing a firearm as a felon and operating a vehicle without the owner's consent were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. The sentencing brought a close to the legal proceedings in a case that had deeply affected the community.
