In the small town of Lu Verne, Iowa, the morning of December 4, 2019, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of Jessica Weishaar, a 43-year-old Caucasian female. A beloved bank employee, she was shot and killed outside the Security State Bank during a botched robbery attempt. The incident unfolded around 8:40 a.m. when law enforcement received a report of a possible shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Weishaar on the sidewalk in front of the bank, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
The investigation swiftly led authorities to a suspect, Valentino Williams, a 36-year-old from Coralville who was on parole at the time of the killing. Investigators utilized surveillance footage and witness accounts to track Williams down. Key evidence, including a coat and ski mask discarded along his escape route, linked him directly to the crime. It was revealed that Williams had a violent criminal history, with a dozen prior convictions for offenses such as robbery, burglary, and assault. He had been granted parole in 2018 after being sentenced to prison for robbery in 2010.
In the face of overwhelming evidence, Valentino Williams pleaded guilty to felony murder. In a plea agreement, an attempted robbery charge was dropped, and he waived his right to an appeal. On February 7, 2020, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Jessica Weishaar. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered him to pay $150,000 in restitution to Weishaar's family, a small measure of justice for a life tragically cut short.
