In the late summer of 2026, Suresh Patel, a 56-year-old man of Indian origin, was embarking on a new chapter in his life. Having moved to the United States from the village of Akhaj in Gujarat, India, nearly three decades prior in search of better opportunities, he had recently relocated from the Chicago area to Jackson, Tennessee. Just days before, on August 17, he proudly took ownership of Ridgecrest Cellars Wine and Spirits, a liquor store located at 2880 Ridgecrest Road.
This new venture, however, would be tragically short-lived. On the evening of Thursday, August 20, 2026, Patel was working in his new shop, accompanied by his 19-year-old daughter and a 70-year-old employee. The promise of his American dream was about to turn into a nightmare.
Around 9:00 p.m., the routine of the evening was shattered when a man, his identity concealed by a paintball-style mask, entered the store. Dressed in a grey hoodie, jeans, and black work-style boots, the unidentified male brandished a firearm and demanded money from the employees. After Patel complied and handed over cash from the register, the assailant, for reasons that remain unclear, opened fire. He fired multiple shots, striking Patel. The gunman then fled the scene, disappearing into the night in a white sedan. When police and emergency services arrived, they found Suresh Patel deceased inside his store. His daughter, who had been standing right beside him, miraculously escaped physical injury, though she was a witness to the horrific event. The 70-year-old employee was also not shot but fell during the robbery and sustained a broken wrist.
The Jackson Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the armed robbery. They released surveillance images of the suspect to the public, describing him as a male, possibly Black, and warning that he should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and capture of the individual responsible for the senseless killing, asking anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact the police department or Crime Stoppers. As of the days following the shooting, no arrests had been made, and no suspect had been publicly identified. The case remains an active investigation, leaving a family to grieve a devastating loss and a community searching for answers and justice for a man who had only just begun to build his new life in their city.
