Vontrelle Ta'lyjah Moore, a 26-year-old man, died on August 2, 2026, after being shot during an early-morning outbreak of gunfire in Huntsville, Alabama. Although the information provided described him as being from Huntsville, police and obituary sources identified Moore as being from Talladega, Alabama. His obituary states that he was born February 15, 2000, in Talladega and was known to relatives and friends as "TLO." He had attended schools in the Talladega County area, played football and basketball, and later attended Alabama A&M University, where he was pursuing a degree in computer science and hoped to graduate in spring 2027. He had also spent more than a year working with the Boys & Girls Club in Huntsville, where he was known as Coach "T" and worked with children.
The violence that claimed Moore's life unfolded at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, near the intersection of Jordan Lane and Mastin Lake Road. Huntsville police officers were dispatched after receiving reports of shots being fired. When they reached the 2800 block of Jordan Lane, they discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers began lifesaving treatment at the scene, and both wounded people were transported to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition. Moore later died from his injuries, while the other critically wounded victim survived and remained hospitalized in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
As police secured the area, it became clear that the shooting had affected more people than those initially found on Jordan Lane. Investigators located a vehicle near Jordan Lane and Grizzard Road that had been struck by gunfire. Two people inside that vehicle had also been wounded and were taken to a hospital, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police subsequently learned that a fifth shooting victim had reached a local hospital in a private vehicle with another non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Altogether, the eruption of gunfire left Moore dead and four other people injured.
Investigators with the Huntsville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit determined in their preliminary investigation that the shooting was connected to a physical altercation. Police said multiple individuals produced firearms during the confrontation and exchanged gunfire. That account indicated investigators were dealing with a chaotic shootout involving several armed participants rather than immediately identifying a single gunman. Detectives began working to determine who was involved, what role each person played, and which gunfire caused the various injuries. They were also gathering physical and other evidence and reviewing surveillance recordings from businesses or locations around the shooting scene.
As of the latest publicly available reporting located through August 11, 2026, Huntsville police had not announced an arrest in Moore's death and had not publicly named a suspect. No murder, manslaughter, weapons, or other criminal charges had been announced in connection with the shooting, and there was therefore no reported trial or conviction. The case remained an active Major Crimes investigation, with detectives continuing to identify the people who took part in the altercation and determine their individual responsibility for the exchange of gunfire.
Police asked anyone who witnessed the confrontation or possessed photographs, recordings, surveillance material, or other information about what happened to provide it to investigators. The continued request for evidence, together with the absence of a publicly identified suspect or arrest, showed that authorities were still reconstructing the sequence of events and trying to establish which armed participants could face criminal responsibility for Moore's death and the injuries to the four surviving victims.
