On a Tuesday afternoon, the life of Demazio Skelton Jr., a 35-year-old man and former Georgia State University football player, was tragically cut short. On August 4, 2026, police responded to a call around 3 p.m. at The Flats on Maple Street apartment complex in Atlanta's Vine City neighborhood, not far from Mercedes-Benz Stadium where Skelton had once played. Arriving officers discovered a chaotic scene where three men had sustained gunshot wounds inside an apartment. Skelton was pronounced deceased at the location, while two other victims were transported to a local hospital. Later, a fourth individual who had also been shot arrived at the hospital by a private vehicle.
The investigation into the shooting pointed to a targeted armed robbery. According to arrest warrants, several men kicked in the door to the apartment and shouted, “Give it up,” leading to a struggle over a gun before shots were fired. Investigators believe the apartment was being used to store illegal drugs for sale, and they recovered packaged marijuana and mushrooms from the scene. While the police department's Gang Unit was brought in to assist, authorities indicated the incident appeared to be targeted, with no ongoing threat to the public. Georgia State University released a statement mourning the loss of Skelton, whom they described as an "exceptional student-athlete" and one of the top defensive players to have played for their team.
Following the incident, police identified 19-year-old Naim Amadu Smith as a suspect. Smith was one of the four men wounded in the shooting and had sought treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital for a gunshot wound to his arm. After reviewing surveillance video and determining that Smith's account of being shot elsewhere was false, authorities arrested him. He was subsequently booked into the Fulton County Jail. Smith faces charges of murder, three counts of armed robbery, and two counts of aggravated assault.
